Community

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, the Chief Shepherd of His people, and the King of the Kingdom of God (Colossians 1:18). All authority belongs to Him, and every leader serves under His lordship for the advancement of His Kingdom and the glory of His name. Leadership is not a position of privilege but a sacred stewardship entrusted by Christ to faithful servants who lead with humility, integrity, love, and the heart of the Chief Shepherd.


We believe that Christ establishes the leadership of His Church according to the pattern revealed in the New Testament through the fivefold ministry and the offices of bishops (overseers), elders, and deacons. These gifts and offices are given by Jesus Christ for the equipping of the saints, the shepherding of God’s people, the strengthening of His Church, and the advancement of His Kingdom. They exist not to build personal ministries, platforms, or human institutions, but to glorify Christ by making devoted disciples and establishing healthy, Spirit-filled communities.


We believe that every leader is first called by God and entrusted with a sacred stewardship. Leadership is never self-appointed nor merely attained through human ambition, education, or ability. Christ Himself calls, gifts, and appoints leaders according to His sovereign wisdom, and the Church has the responsibility to prayerfully recognize, affirm, and appoint those whom God has raised up for service.


We believe that God’s calling is inseparable from godly character. Throughout Scripture, those entrusted with spiritual leadership were recognized not only by their gifting, but by lives marked by faithfulness, humility, spiritual maturity, sound doctrine, integrity, wisdom, and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Leadership is confirmed not merely by spiritual gifts, but by a life that consistently reflects the character of Jesus Christ.


Following the example and exhortation of the Apostle Peter, we believe leaders are called to shepherd the flock of God willingly, not by compulsion; eagerly, not for dishonest gain; and never by lording authority over those entrusted to them, but by becoming examples to the flock (1 Peter 5:1–4). Whether serving as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, bishops, elders, or deacons, every leader remains under the authority of Jesus Christ, the Chief Shepherd, and is called to exercise leadership through humility, sacrificial love, faithful stewardship, and servant-hearted care for God’s people.


Above all, we believe that the highest qualification for leadership is faithfulness to Jesus Christ. We value spiritual maturity above charisma, character above gifting, humility above ambition, obedience above personal achievement, and servanthood above position. Leadership is entrusted to those whose calling has been affirmed by the Church, whose lives demonstrate proven faithfulness over time, and whose greatest desire is to glorify Christ by faithfully serving His people.

The Fivefold Ministry


We believe that Jesus Christ has given apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to His Church to equip the saints for the work of ministry, build up the Body of Christ, and lead believers into spiritual maturity (Ephesians 4:11–16). These ministry gifts are given by Christ according to His sovereign will for the advancement of the Kingdom of God and the strengthening of His Church.


Each ministry gift reveals a unique aspect of Christ’s ministry, yet all are called to reflect the heart of Jesus, the Chief Shepherd. Every fivefold minister is called to love, serve, protect, disciple, and care for God’s people with humility, compassion, and faithfulness.

We believe the fivefold ministry is not a hierarchy of authority but a family of servants. Each ministry gift reveals a unique expression of Christ’s ministry while working together in unity to equip the saints, establish the Kingdom of God, strengthen the Church, and make devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.

Apostle

Greek: apostolos — “one who is sent with the authority of another”

The Greek word apostolos describes one who is commissioned and sent as an authorized representative. Apostles are sent by Jesus Christ to establish His Kingdom, lay spiritual foundations, strengthen the Church, and raise up leaders who will continue His mission.

An apostle pioneers, builds, and establishes the Kingdom of God. Apostles lay spiritual foundations, raise up leaders, plant churches and ministries, and bring biblical order, vision, and unity to the Body of Christ. Following the example of Jesus, apostles are servants of all, using their authority to equip, strengthen, and empower others rather than to elevate themselves. Like Christ, they lead with the heart of the Chief Shepherd, caring deeply for the people they serve.

Prophet

Greek: prophētēs — “one who speaks forth on behalf of another”

The Greek word prophētēs describes one who faithfully speaks forth the message of another. Prophets hear the voice of God and communicate His heart, always pointing people back to Christ, His Word, and faithful obedience.

A prophet faithfully hears and communicates the heart of God to His people. Prophets call the Church to holiness, strengthen and encourage believers, provide biblical exhortation and spiritual discernment, and help the Body remain sensitive to the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit. Their ministry reflects the heart of the Chief Shepherd by speaking the truth in love, restoring the wandering, strengthening the weak, and building up the Body of Christ.

Evangelist

Greek: euangelistēs — “bearer of good news”

The Greek word euangelistēs refers to one who announces joyful news. Evangelists proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God, calling people to repentance, faith in Jesus Christ, and a life of discipleship.

An evangelist passionately proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom and leads people to Jesus Christ. Evangelists inspire the Church to reach the lost, demonstrate God’s love and power, and make evangelism and disciple-making a lifestyle. Reflecting the heart of the Chief Shepherd, they care not only that people are saved but that they are welcomed into the family of God, discipled, and established in the faith.

Pastor

Greek: poimēn — “shepherd”

The Greek word poimēn simply means “shepherd.” Just as a shepherd feeds, protects, guides, and cares for a flock, pastors faithfully care for God’s people under the leadership of Jesus, the Chief Shepherd.

A pastor lovingly shepherds and cares for God’s people. Pastors nurture spiritual growth, protect the flock, restore the hurting, and cultivate healthy biblical community. They uniquely express Christ’s shepherding ministry while reflecting the same heart of the Chief Shepherd shared by every ministry gift.

Teacher

Greek: didaskalos — “teacher” or “instructor”

The Greek word didaskalos refers to one who instructs others with understanding. Teachers faithfully explain and apply God’s Word so believers are grounded in sound doctrine, mature in their faith, and equipped to live according to the truth of God’s Kingdom.

A teacher faithfully explains and applies the Word of God. Teachers help believers understand Scripture, build sound doctrine, and mature in wisdom and obedience. Reflecting the heart of the Chief Shepherd, they patiently guide God’s people into truth so they may know Christ more deeply, faithfully obey His Word, and live as citizens of His Kingdom.

Bishops (Overseers)

We believe that bishops (overseers) are entrusted with the spiritual oversight of the local church and its ministries. They guard sound doctrine, protect the spiritual health of the community, provide vision and accountability, and ensure that every aspect of the church remains faithful to Scripture and aligned with the mission of the Kingdom of God.

As shepherds under the Chief Shepherd, bishops lead with wisdom, humility, and integrity, serving not through control or personal authority, but through faithful stewardship, biblical leadership, and loving oversight. Their desire is to see Christ’s Kingdom flourish through healthy communities, faithful leaders, and devoted disciples.

Elders

We believe that elders are spiritually mature shepherds recognized for their godly character, wisdom, and proven faithfulness. Following the example given in 1 Peter 5, elders willingly shepherd the flock of God, serving as overseers with humility, eagerness, and sacrificial love, never lording authority over those entrusted to their care but becoming examples to the flock.

Elders care for God’s people through prayer, discipleship, pastoral care, teaching, biblical counsel, and spiritual encouragement. Their lives model faithful obedience to Christ as they strengthen families, disciple believers, cultivate healthy biblical community, and help equip the saints for the work of ministry.

Deacons

We believe that deacons are trusted servants who faithfully oversee the practical ministries and daily needs of the church. Through faithful service, administration, hospitality, generosity, compassion, and wise stewardship, they help create an environment where the ministry of the Word, prayer, discipleship, worship, and the mission of the Kingdom can flourish without distraction.

Like every leader in Christ’s Church, deacons lead by serving. Their ministry reflects the humility of Jesus Christ, demonstrating that greatness in the Kingdom is found not in position but in faithful service to God and His people.

Working Together

We believe that every leadership gift and office is essential to the health, unity, and maturity of the Church. While each has a distinct calling and responsibility, none is intended to function independently or in isolation. Under the lordship of Jesus Christ, every leader serves in mutual submission, honor, accountability, and love.

The fivefold ministry equips the saints, strengthens the Church, helps establish healthy biblical leadership, and provides Kingdom vision. Bishops provide spiritual oversight and guard the health of the community. Elders shepherd, disciple, and care for God’s people. Deacons strengthen the ministry through faithful service, administration, and compassionate care. Together these gifts and offices complement one another, each serving according to the grace and responsibility entrusted to them, while seeking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and remaining anchored in the authority of Scripture.

We believe that healthy leadership reproduces healthy disciples who become faithful leaders. As leaders invest their lives in others through discipleship, the Church is strengthened, families are restored, communities are transformed, and the Kingdom of God advances from generation to generation.

Our desire is not to build ministries around personalities or platforms, but to cultivate communities centered on Jesus Christ, where every believer is equipped to know the Father, follow Jesus, walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, and faithfully fulfill his or her God-given calling.

Because Jesus Christ is the Head of His Church and the Chief Shepherd of His people, every leader is ultimately accountable to Him. We therefore seek to raise up leaders who finish well—remaining faithful to Christ, devoted to His people, unwavering in sound doctrine, and steadfast in advancing His Kingdom throughout every season of life and ministry.

In all things, our desire is that Jesus Christ would be exalted, His Kingdom would come, His will would be done on earth as it is in heaven, and every aspect of Koinonia House Communities would bring glory to God.
